An enthusiastic and dedicated Veterinarian to join our dynamic team, working between the Brownsville Animal Shelter and the Gladys Porter Zoo. This unique position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on animal welfare and conservation in a supportive community-focused environment. Whether you are a recent graduate looking to begin your career, an experienced veterinarian seeking to branch onto the exotic animal realm, or a professional approaching retirement who wants to contribute in a rewarding role, this position is an ideal fit.
As Veterinarian, you will provide compassionate medical care to a wide variety of animals, ensuring their health and well-being through examinations, vaccinations, and routine surgical procedures such as spaying and neutering. Split between the animal shelter and zoo, you will play a vital role in improving animal welfare and public health while providing support in the innovative care of a diverse ensemble of 325 species of zoo mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Additionally, you will have opportunities to engage with the public, promoting responsible pet ownership and education on animal health.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Veterinarian
Minimum Requirements:
- Education: D.V.M. (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) or V.M.D. (Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris).
- Licensure: Licensed as a Veterinarian by the State of Texas and holds a DEA Controlled Substance Registration Certificate.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest in or familiarity with both shelter medicine and exotic animal care, with opportunities for training provided.
- Strong interpersonal skills for public education and collaboration with veterinary staff.
- A passion for community service and the ability to split time effectively between the animal shelter and zoo.
