The public service stories worth telling
A new playground opens. The water runs clean. A neighborhood gets its trash picked up on time. Behind each of those everyday expectations are people making decisions, solving problems and keeping a community moving.
Those are the people Dave Martin wants us to notice.
In Episode #94 of The Clear Voice, Dave joins James Groom for a conversation about local government, public trust and the stories that deserve more attention. A veteran journalist and host and producer of The Good Government Show, Dave has spent his career asking questions. Today, many of those questions focus on how public servants make life better for the people they serve.
Making everyday service visible
Dave’s reporting has taken him from local newspapers to national television and international assignments. His podcast brings that experience to conversations with mayors, county officials and public employees whose work often goes unnoticed.
He shares examples of community arts programs, workforce training and public servants committed to improving essential services. These stories help residents understand what government does and why that work matters.
For leaders, there is a practical lesson: explain the people, decisions and results behind the service. Residents may see a finished project without knowing the problem it solved or the effort required to make it happen.
Building trust through better conversations
James and Dave discuss the difficulty of communicating when criticism spreads quickly and political disagreements become personal.
Dave points to Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt’s call for more respectful dialogue and a renewed focus on shared priorities. Clean water, safe neighborhoods, reliable services and places for families to gather give communities plenty of common ground.
Listening matters, too. Dave describes asking challenging questions without turning an interview into a confrontation. Leaders can explain their decisions, acknowledge concerns and respond with facts while keeping the conversation respectful.
Reaching residents where they are
As local news coverage shrinks, cities have to think carefully about how residents receive information.
Dave shares his experience producing custom podcasts, including As Fate Would Have It with former Fate, Texas Mayor David Billings. A podcast gives leaders room to explain an issue, discuss a decision and answer questions in greater depth.
It works best alongside a useful website, newsletters, press releases and social media. Different residents follow different channels, and a strong communication plan gives them several ways to stay informed.
Consistency is essential. A manageable schedule that an organization can maintain is more useful than an ambitious launch that disappears after a few episodes.
Remember what the work makes possible
The conversation closes with encouragement for public servants who may be feeling discouraged.
Dave recalls a city manager who could drive through her community and point to improvements she helped make possible. A park, a swing set or a small safety improvement can represent months of work that residents never see.
Take time to recognize those accomplishments. Celebrate the wins, including the small ones, and help the next generation see the opportunities available in public service.
