IMPACTFUL LEADERSHIP IN THE NEW WORLD

As a learning leader and professional coach, I have taught people how to lead other people more than 40 years. Five basic behaviors formed the foundation of my leadership development framework.

Even after 2020 changed how we live and work forever, I still believe these principles remain essential for anyone seeking to be an impactful leader in business, education, government, or nonprofits. In fact, these behaviors are more important than ever for becoming an impactful leader of others.

LEAN INTO YOUR STRENGTHS

Know what you do well and do it to the best of your ability. Find roles in life and work where you can love what you do every day. Stop dwelling on the talents you do not have. Instead, grow your dominant talents into strengths. Build a team around you that is strong where you have lesser strengths. Impactful leaders lead from their strengths and manage their weaknesses.

MASTER YOUR EMOTIONS

Emotions are normal and natural. Use your emotions wisely depending on the situation. Control your emotions without stifling them in an unhealthy way. Learn more about emotional intelligence and grow your emotional skills. Take care with social media, where emotions run rampant. Impactful leaders understand the power of EQ over IQ.

LEAD WITH PURPOSE

Everyone wants to know WHY. Give them the why. Inspire followers with an exciting, shared vision for the future. Be forever zealous for your personal credibility. People are desperate to follow credible leaders who mean what they say and do what they say they will do. Be that person. Be the leader people will follow to the end, not just follow enough to keep their jobs. Impactful leaders inspire others to go with them to a better place.

LEARN LIFE BALANCE

Find your purpose outside of school and making a living. Aggressively care for your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Encourage others to do the same. One of the most human leadership qualities is compassion. Embody that by caring genuinely for others’ wellbeing. Life is shorter than any of us think. In the end, titles do not matter, but legacy endures. Impactful leaders care for themselves and actively encourage self-care in others.

BECOME MASSIVELY INCLUSIVE

Everyone is different. So, take from everyone’s experiences, background, cultures, values, strengths, and perspectives. Then, use those differences to create a unified path to a common success. Respect everyone even when it is hard, even when not earned. We are all in this together. Make yourself more agile and resilient by constantly learning, seeking new thought patterns, new skills, new understanding of the world around you. Impactful leaders embrace the world with curiosity and without resistance.
