Help Shape the Future of the Frisco Fire Department

The City of Frisco, Texas, is searching for its next Fire Chief, and Episode #81 of The Clear Voice gives prospective candidates an inside look at the department, the community, and the leadership opportunity ahead.

In this PositionCast™, host James Groom and Clear Career Professionals President Michael Boese are joined by Frisco City Manager Wes Pierson, Deputy City Manager E.A. Hoppe, and Interim Fire Chief Clay Carpenter for an in-depth conversation about what makes Frisco unique and what the City is looking for in its next fire service leader.

This is not a turnaround assignment. Frisco’s next Fire Chief will inherit a high-performing organization with talented employees, significant resources, a collaborative leadership team, and high expectations.

A High-Performing Fire Department Built for the Future

The Frisco Fire Department includes 299 positions, with 265 sworn personnel, operating from 10 fire stations. The department currently deploys 10 engines, seven ambulances, three truck companies, and one heavy rescue.

Growth is continuing. Fire Station 11 is already in design, planning is underway for Station 12, a fourth truck company is coming, and the department anticipates adding an eighth ambulance as service demands increase.

Frisco also maintains an ISO Class 1 rating and holds fire service and EMS accreditations that reflect the department’s commitment to professional standards and continuous improvement.

Growth, Innovation, and New Operational Challenges

Frisco’s growth is increasingly moving upward rather than outward, creating new high-rise response and training considerations for the department.

EMS represents approximately 70 percent of Frisco Fire’s activity, and the department continues to pursue progressive approaches to emergency medicine, including field blood transfusions.

The PositionCast™ also explores Frisco’s SAFER system, Situational Awareness for Emergency Response, an internally developed GIS-based platform with more than 30 integrations supporting emergency responders.

Frisco’s major sports and entertainment venues create another distinctive operational environment. The community is home to organizations and venues associated with the Dallas Cowboys, FC Dallas, the PGA of America, the Dallas Stars, and the Frisco RoughRiders, requiring extensive coordination for special events and emergency management.

The Leadership Frisco Is Looking For

Throughout the conversation, Frisco leaders emphasize several qualities that will be critical for the next Fire Chief.

The successful candidate will need to listen and learn before making major changes, build meaningful relationships throughout the department and community, communicate clearly and consistently, and embrace Frisco’s collaborative “Team Frisco” culture.

Confidence is important, but so is humility. The next chief will be expected to recognize what is already working, understand why it works, and identify opportunities to make a strong organization even better.

Candidates should also be prepared for the pace. Frisco operates quickly, expectations are high, and the organization is looking for a leader comfortable working in that environment.
